Carla Klouda's long-idle passion for photography
was rekindled in the late '90s with a nature photography workshop
sponsored by the Bucks County Audubon Society. That led to more
workshops and trips to Maine, Montana, Canada, Ohio and Tennessee.
But her favorite images come from the country roads of Bucks County,
Pennsylvania…places she returns to again and again…at
the edges of the day, in all seasons and in all kinds of weather. What catches Klouda's interest and makes
her reach for her camera? "I
love to record life's little events and interactions...the first
steps into toddlerhood, two friends sharing a moment, a peak
of action or emotion in a competition. I guess that comes from
my photojournalism training. And I find satisfaction in expressing
my vision of little scenes that otherwise go unnoticed…the
graceful curve on the edge of a petal, the mix of colors in a
basket of vegetables or the muted, sponge-painted hillsides of
spring.
"I am currently exploring a variety
of experimental techniques, such as various forms of montage,
a layering of two or more films to create a new third image.
The fun about these techniques is the wide range of visual
effects that create endless possibilities. I find part of myself
moving beyond the typical photographic image, yet another part
of me still looks for interactions and relationships. I guess
overall, if a subject excites me, I want to capture that and
communicate what I'm feeling through my images."
Klouda uses both film and digital cameras and does her own scanning
and printing using the latest archival inks on fine art archival
papers.
